CHECKLIST 

1. Apply for study permit - all international students has to have a study permit if they’re from a country outside EU/EAA

2. Check that you have a valid insurance. read more below

3. You need to have a contact person in Norway - if not, have a plan for where to stay during the school vacations. 

4. If you are under 18, remember to sign the agreement papers before arriving the school in August

5. Make sure that you have booked an appointment at the Police station after arriving Norway. 


 1. STUDY PERMIT / VISA

Start a study permit application process for those of you that comes from a country outside EU/EEA. If you are from a country outside EU/EEA you are also required by the UDI to pay the whole school fee in advance (NOK 137 300)

Do I have to apply for a study permit? 
All applicants have their own story, background and connection to Norway. We therefore recommend to follow the information at the UDI webpage regarding the application process for a residence permit for students at folk high school. 

  • You are fully responsible for the process regarding study permit and visa application.
  • The process will vary depending on which country you apply from, and also your citizenship.
  • When Rønningen receive the school fee, we will make a confirmation letter that you need for this application.
  • The application process can take up to several months, so please start this process as early as possible, and keep us updated about the process.
  • If your visa application is declined, the school fee (minus the registration fee of NOK 2800) will be refunded into the applicant's account.
  • After arriving Norway, make sure that you book an appointment for registration with the Police and get the residence card. 

 


2. INSURANCE

All international students have to carry a valid insurance. You must carry a valid travel, accident and health insurance from your own country. The insurance must cover you during your entire stay in Norway, as well as during study trips to other countries. Please remember to send a copy of your insurance to post@ronningen.fhs.no before arriving Rønningen in August 2025.

Rønningen have a travel- and accident insurance which covers Norwegian citizens who are members of The National Insurance Sheme (Folketrygden). If you are not a member, you can apply for a voluntary membership for the schoolyear. Apply here. NB: If you have a Norwegian passport, but have never lived in Norway before -you must check if you are a member of Folketrygden. 

 


3. CONTACT PERSON IN NORWAY 

All international students are required to have a contact person with an address in Norway. Make sure that your contact person has signed the agreement papers before arriving Rønningen in August. 

  • This person will be like your next of kin, and will also receive information from the school during the year in Norwegian. 
  • This person should be able to host you during the school holidays, unless you wish to stay elsewhere or are travel back home. The school will be closed during vacations, it is not possible to stay at the school.
  • This person should be able to assist you in required processes such as registering with the police upon arrival, getting a bank account if necessary, Norwegian mobile (optional), or other administrative things. The school does not have the capacity to help students with these tasks.
  • A contact person should be able to host you in the case of expulsion or any other reason that means you cannot live in the school's dormitories.

 If you do not have a contact person in Norway, you must contact the school directly.


4. SCHOOL TUITION AND LÅNEKASSEN 

The school fee for 2025-2026 is NOK 137 300 and it breaks down into the following:

  • NOK 2800: Registration fee*
  • NOK 131 500: Boarding and lodging
    This guarantees for accommondation in a double/tripple room, 3-4 meals a day, excursions and school trips, travel card for public transport in Oslo, social and cultural activities, Rønningen-hoodie, lunch box, WIFI, washing machine etc.
  • NOK 1500: Pre-course international students
  • NOK 1500: Books and teaching international students

 If you are from a country outside EU/EEA, you are required to pay the whole school fee in advance.
